GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG.

30th July, 1914.

22208 I have the honour to refer you to paragraph 4 of

my despatch No.188 of the 29th May in which I recommended that

the salaries of Probationers in the Nursing Staff should be

increased, and to express regret that I omitted to advocate an

equivalent increase for nurses.

2.

A Probationer on completing her probationary

period of three years is required to serve a further two years

as a nurse before she becomes eligible for a permanent appoint-

ment as a staff nurse. As an increase in the salaries of pro-

bationers ought necessarily to be accompanied by an equivalent

increase in the salaries of nurses, it was my intention to

recommend that the latter should be raised to $840 rising to

$900 after one year.

3.

One of the probationers is due for promotion to

nurse on the 1st December next and subject to your approval I

have made provision in the Estimates for 1915 for a salary of

$840.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

LEWIS HARCOURT, M.P.,
